How to Get Back in Alignment When Life Feels Out of Control

That mental hamster wheel is exhausting of “You’re behind! You should be doing more!” is exhausting.

Here’s the thing: life has seasons, and our brains tend to overlook that...

They’ll tell us we’re failing because we’re not sticking to goals or plans we made when life looked different.

Have you ever considered this: maybe those plans weren’t built for this season.

So what do you do when your brain is spinning out on all the “shoulds”?

You set priorities for right now and give yourself permission to adjust if what you thought you "SHOULD" be doing no longer aligns.

  1. Call out your brain’s BS. When the guilt starts creeping in, notice the stories. “You should be doing more,” “You’re so behind,” or “Why isn’t this done yet?” Stop. Ask yourself: is this thought actually useful? 9.9 times out of 10, it’s not.

  2. Set 3-5 priorities for your current season. Not what past-you thought was important. Not what everyone else is doing. What matters right now in your life? For example:

    • Getting your kids where they need to be without losing your sanity.

    • Prioritizing your well-being (and yes, that includes rest).

    • Tackling one or two things on the to-do list without trying to conquer the world.

  3. Remind yourself daily: your job is to focus on now. And when the guilt train pulls into the station...you’re not getting on. “Nope, not today.”  That ticket’s expired, friend.

  4. Adjust when life throws curveballs. Plans and goals aren’t set in stone. If something isn’t working for this season, it’s okay to shift. It doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re adapting. That’s a win.

Here’s the truth: you’re not “behind.” You’re not “failing.” You’re just in a different season, and the key to thriving is giving yourself grace, setting realistic priorities, and letting go of the pressure to do it all. Because let’s be real—what felt good or important in one season might not in another, and when our values or priorities shift, our goals need to shift with them.
